Open Studios Continues This Weekend!

The Thirteenth Annual North Coast Open Studios (NCOS) continues this Saturday & Sunday with Weekend 2! NCOS showcases local artists and art businesses, drawing thousands of local and regional visitors to the many studios, workshops, galleries and businesses.

the Studio Ready to Show

Only two weeks away and its time to take stock of my studio. I am lucky enough to have a good sized studio - 14’ x 8’ - but there still never seems to be enough space. I have a well-thought-out system for storing my materials and books, however when I see it through the eyes of a visitor it doesn’t seem very organized at all. Early on I figured out that everything needs to have a designated place or things get lost so I have hooks, containers, cabinets, and shelves filling my studio. It works pretty well for me, but I need to do some tidying up before Open Studios.

First, I need to remove extraneous objects that have crept in over the year. Why do I have the sleeping bags and Packers cheeseheads in my studio? Next I’ll remove my 24” x 24” homemade photography cube which takes up way too much room. New white paper covering my work tables will go a long way towards making the studio clean and fresh. I’ll shake out the rugs, sweep and mop the floor, and maybe tackle cleaning the sliding glass doors if I am really ambitious.

Part of my attention is on finishing a few more fused glass pieces before the big weekend. Just back from Portland with my new assortment of Bullseye glass I am eager to use some new colors and design some brand new pieces. I usually don’t have my artwork hung up in my studio, but I like to do it for Open Studios. So out with my Jamie Wyeth poster and up with some glass. Finally, there is the yard and garden to consider, as my visitors have to walk around to the back of my house in order to get to my studio.

Its really not going to be all that much work, but I do like my studio to look its best for the big weekend. Now its back to the studio!

The Open Studios Preview Show & Reception Will Be Saturday May 7th

Join North Coast Open Studios participating artists for an Artists’ Show and Reception featuring 60+ Open Studios participating artists. The Reception will take place Saturday, May 7th from 6 to 9pm during Arts Alive at the Adorni Center (1011 Waterfront Drive Eureka).

This free event is open to everyone! Take this opportunity to preview artwork, ranging from paintings and photographs to ceramics and textiles, with everything in between.

Visitors will also get a chance to meet Open Studios artists. There will be live music by Gregg Moore and friends, appetizers and a no host wine bar that benefits North Coast Open Studios. And as a special treat for the night: get an early copy of the 2011 North Coast Open Studios guidebook! The guidebook will also be available in the June 3rd issue of the North Coast Journal and in arts friendly venues throughout Humboldt County.

The event is also a fundraiser for North Coast Open Studios. You will be able to purchase tickets for the 2011 NCOS Benefit Drawing, featuring artwork by three fabulous Open Studios artists: painter Julia Bednar, ceramic artist Peggy Loudon and wire artist Elizabeth Berrien. Pieces by all three artists will be raffled off to benefit NCOS, tickets are available for a $5 donation to NCOS.

The show is a sampling of artists who have signed up for North Coast Open Studios 2011. NCOS will take place two weekends in June; The 4th & 5th and 11th & 12th in Humboldt County. About half of this year’s participants contributed a piece for the reception and gallery show.

Why I Participate in the Artist Preview Show

Maybe you're wondering "why should I enter and attend the North Coast Open Studios Artist Preview Show & Reception"?

This is a terrific opportunity for possible patrons to see your work up close and personal! Usually photographed images do not accurately reflect "Art" that has been created ... this is why I paint - photos don't do justice to the images that are created in my mind. And when I send my images off to be scanned, the subtlies of color are never captured.

What better chance will the participants of NCOS have to entice people to come to their studios than participating in this wonderful opening! Please submit your "STAR" piece in this show ... you'll want to shine. If you are in attendance, possible "buyers" will have the opportunity to meet you and begin a true relationship with you and your art. An artist cannot hope for better! Last year we had a fantastic turn out. People were really impressed with the quality of the show - art was Sold - and the public had the to opportunity to see our beautiful raffle items and purchase tickets (please note that these raffled items are going toward the support of the NCOS ... without the raffle this opening and several other benefits will not be possible). I plan on participating in and attending this show... hope to see you there "shining".

North Coast Open Studios is still a couple of months away, but we are currently working out the details of the North Coast Open Studios 2011 Official Guide. If you would like advertise in this year's guide, please contact me soon.

This year's event will be delivered in every copy of the Journal, Thursday, June 2. There will be an additional 5,000 copies available for pre-event distribution beginning May 7. (Total distribution: 26,000.) Deadline is April 14.

Don't forget, the deadline to register for North Coast Open Studios is today (Wednesday, March 16th)!

You can download an application on our website at www.northcoastopenstudios.com. Applications can be dropped off at the Ink People Center for the Arts (517 Third Street, Suite 36, Eureka - in the Clark Building) today between 9 am and 5 pm.

Also, if you are still unsure about NCOS participation, there is a workshop walking prospective NCOS participants through the process of participating in NCOS. The workshop will be tomorrow (Thursday the 17th) at 6:30 pm at the Ink People office. You will get a chance to ask any questions you have about Open Studios and complete and turn in an application!

What Open Studios is for me...

Participating in Open Studios for the first time last June was one of my favorite activities.

I am usually at the Glass Art Society annual Conference which conflicts with NCOS. When it became apparent I wouldn’t be able to go the conference last year, I signed up. After all, I’ve been a committee member for several years.

It turned out to be one of the highlights of my year. It was fun, inspirational, and definitely surpassed my expectations.

In preparation, I cleaned my studio, made new pedestals, added lighting, and rearranged work areas, temporarily turning them into display areas. I was pleased with these long over-due studio activities necessary for inviting the public into my studio.

I told myself if even a few people showed up, it would be worth the effort. Instead, the flow of people all weekend was constant. Opening my studio provided the opportunity for people specifically interested in my work or my media of glass to visit. It was a chance to share our experiences. When participants saw and understood my process, they were surprised how much goes into it. My work, materials, ideas opened up dialogs on shared love of materials, travels, past experiences, relationships, everything imaginable and some unimaginable. I loved every minute of listening and communicating with the wonderful people that stopped by.

There were purchases of my work as well. As an artist making a living from art, that’s always a good thing. However what was especially interesting was what people wanted to purchase that I hadn’t considered selling. People had novel ideas for how they wanted to display pieces they purchased. The comments, ideas, and surprises regarding sales, was extremely worthwhile.
I could write a long narrative encouraging artist participation if you are at all on the fence. The same thing goes for visitors to artists’ studios. The once a year North Coast Open Studios has something to offer everyone and shouldn’t be missed!

Open Studios Workshop & Deadline

Calling All Humboldt County Artists: The deadline to apply for the 2011 North Coast Open Studios is Wednesday, March 16th! Don't miss your chance to participate in this creative showcase for local artists.

Not sure if participation in NCOS is right for you? Have you thought about participating, but decided not to because… Your studio is in a small corner of your kitchen (or bedroom or living room)? Or because you don’t have a business license or reseller’s number? Or you wouldn't know where to begin to actually PRESENT and SELL your work? Or maybe it did not occur to you that people actually buy art in Humboldt County?

Here’s your chance to get answers to these questions and to find out whether or not NCOS is right for you. This could be the first step in turning your passion into a business enterprise. NCOS participating artist and Artist Marketing Coach Extraordinaire Victoria Ryan will be facilitating a workshop on Thursday, March 17th at 6:30 pm at the Ink People office (517 Third Street, Suite 36, Eureka). She will walk prospective participating artists through everything from the essential participation issues to personal accounts from successful local artists.

You will have the chance to find out what is required to participate in NCOS, get tips and suggestions on how to arrange your home studio to optimize your space for public viewing, learn how NCOS can help you market your art, and much more… NCOS Coordinator Taffy Stockton will also be on hand to answer questions.

Why I Participate in Open Studios

North Coast Open Studios is a fantastic event for artists to participate in and for people to attend.

I’ve participated for two years (this will be my third) and I have attended for at least five years. It’s a great time of year to be out and about, following the maps and directions to many different studios. The usually favorable weather allows artists to use both indoor and outside spaces providing some beautiful settings for the artwork. Whether you are traveling down a garden path, entering an outside stand-alone studio or coming right in through the front door, the anticipation builds as you approach the artist’s studio.

I love Open Studios from the perspective of an artist as well as a visitor. I enjoy welcoming guests into my studio space. It’s not glamorous – it’s just a lower level room in my house – but I love that space and what I am inspired to do there. Open Studios gives me a reason to clean up and look at the studio through new eyes - what space couldn’t use that? After I get all my jars of ground glass arranged by color, my glass sheets safely lined up in their wooden storage crate, my cutting and grinding area swept clean of little glass shards, and my artwork hung on the walls I feel proud to share this space with visitors.

It’s great to have people who are sincerely interested in your work inquire about how it is made, the materials used, how long it takes to create. These questions often provoke insights I didn’t know I had! Talking with my guests can generate new ideas, help with problem-solving and let me appreciate my work anew. All you artists who are on the fence - now is the time to sign up for Open Studios, you’ll be glad you did!

Four Myrtletown Artists Open Their Creative Spaces

Four Myrtletown artists will be sharing their unique spaces with the public during the first weekend of this year's 12th Annual North Coast Open Studios Tour. The community will have the rare opportunity to visit the studios of glass artist Susan Bloch-Welliver, painter Yvonne Kern, mixed media artist Kathy Marie and, potter Kate Purcell. This eclectic mix of artists share, along with their neighborhood, a deep connection with nature and it's designs.

Susan Bloch-Welliver, a nationally recognized glass artist, creates her "one of a kind" pieces in a multifaceted studio located at 1081 Vernon Street. Bloch-Welliver is creating a unique series of mixed media work while specializing in commissioned etched glass and sculptures.

"Time and nature compel me," says Bloch-Welliver. "I sharpen my awareness by memorializing daily moments of awe with shapes of glass, which become translated into sculptures". Sculptures, glass flowers, and etched glass are a few of the treasures that will be available for purchase at her studio.

Bloch-Welliver's work can be found in a recently released book titled Creative Glass, by Danijela Kracun & Charles McFadden, and at www.blochstudio.com.

Yvonne Kern's backyard studio is across the street from Susan Bloch-Welliver's studio. Visitors will find a tent pavilion and studio down a garden path behind the house. As a representational oil and watercolor painter for more than 20 years, Kern has found a lot of inspiration in her private space.

"I love the abundant beauty of this area. North Coast Open Studios offers me an unprecedented opportunity to share with our community this beauty that I have captured with my art."

Kern will exhibit several new oil and watercolor paintings. Note cards, "recycled art bookmarks", and a few other rare small gift items will be offered for sale. See www.yvonnekern.com for more information.

Kathy Marie, a local collage/mixed media artist, has been selling her art and participating in local holiday fairs for many years. Her inspiration comes from attending workshops, reading art books, working with talented artists in the area, and traveling experiences.

Marie's studio can be found on Hill Street, behind the Myrtle Avenue Starbucks. Look for
the green door. "For years I have been creating art using many different kinds of media but I have always felt most comfortable with collage/mixed media," says Marie about her art. "I love to work with color and try to express a powerful emotion in my work.. I feel art is an expression of oneself and a message about the world.. So as I grow as an individual so does my art."

Visitors will find digital photography, collages, altered art and one of a kind stuffed toys at her studio. Her work can be seen at the Rustic West Trading Co. in Old Town Eureka and on www.kathymarie.net.

Kate Purcell has been creating pottery for more than 20 years and her handmade colorfully decorated pottery is well known in Humboldt County. Her studio is located in a shop behind her house at 2572 Myrtle Ave. (Between Hubbard Street and Hall Ave) Visitors will have the opportunity to see her new wall plaques in addition to her other fine serving pieces.

"I like to imagine all the pots we have made over the years being used and enjoyed at social gatherings", Purcell said.

For 2010, the NCOS artists are offering an art-filled way to raise funds for this event: Support North Coast Open Studios and get a chance to win and one of three beautiful art pieces!

Local oil painter Kathy O’Leary, Jewelry artist Christina Swindgler and glass artist Susan Bloch have all donated pieces for the benefit drawing. Kathy O’Leary donated an oil painting “Mad River Bluffs”, approximate framed size is 21” x 27”, valued at $1,300. Christina Swingdler, of Christina Anastasia, donated a Swarovski crystal and stone necklace and earring set, valued at $175. Glass artist Susan Bloch, of Bloch Studios, donated an etched glass plate “Nesting” valued at $350.

All three pieces will be raffled off on Wednesday, June 23rd, and the proceeds will benefit North Coast Open Studios, and help defray the costs of this community event. Getting Ready for Open Studios

Open Studios is always a joyful experience...meeting and talking with people who have come to see where we artists create our work...a glimpse into the private world of a producing artist...an opportunity to see work in progress as well as finished pieces of art. That's what it's all about.

But before Open Studios happens, artists need to get their studios ready for visitors. For some totally organized artists, that is simple...just straighten a few things, plan refreshments and put the Open Studios signs up.

For others of us, getting ready for Open Studios is a major undertaking. For me, it begins just after taxes are finished...when I start saying "I have to get ready for Open Studios". But the days fly by and the end of April, I realize that time is getting short, and I need to fit "getting ready" into my already overcrowded schedule.

I have a pretty big yard, neglected all winter...that needs to have a spring (now that the weather isn't so cold) grooming. The windows want to be washed. And the clutter of paintings, frames, supplies, unfinished projects, etc...need to be dealt with somehow. Invitations have to be designed, printed and mailed. So May is the month to focus on creating order out of chaos, preparing for the exciting weekends in June when I will share my studio, my work and my lifestyle with visitors.

No, people who visit my studio won't find a perfect environment. Try as i might, I won't be able to magically turn my place into an advertisement for House Beautiful. But the folks who visit me will see what an artist's studio really looks like... paintings not yet finished, completed works, brushes and canvases and paints and art books and all the stuff that makes my studio what it is. They can also walk around my yard, check out whatever is blooming in June and relax for a bit in a lawn chair and enjoy some refreshments.

Most of all, I want people to feel welcomed to my studio, enjoy their visit and leave with a greater appreciation of what we artists do to create our work. That's what makes it all worthwhile.

The deadline to register for the Twelfth Annual North Coast Open Studios (NCOS) is today (Tuesday, March 16)! Today is your last chance to contact NCOS Coordinator Taffy Stockton and reserve spot for this creative showcase for local artists.

Have you been considering participating, but haven't made up your mind yet? Try it out! NCOS 2010 is shaping up to be a great year, and participation is a great was to get information about your art out to thousands of people.

Attendees rave about the opportunity to see artists at work and in their creative spaces.

Preparing For NCOS... As A New Artist

It was one year ago this April that I first spotted a 4"x 5" flyer titled "North Coast Open Studios" on the counter in The Art Center. As a new Humboldt County resident and a career changing, fledgling artist I was interested in participating in every art event I could find. Sadly I realized this NCOS was for artists with studios. At the time I still considered my art a hobby and I really didn't have a studio. I thought..."Well, maybe next year I'll have my own studio."

Actually the timing was good. I found I could leisurely cruise the artists in the NCOS map & guidebook and see how all the other artists set up their work places... maybe get some ideas. I found the weekend to be perfectly inspiring. I made some new artist friends, and here I am today, getting ready for NCOS with my own studio.

I think this will be fun. An entire weekend of welcoming art seekers into my most favorite space in the world...my studio. Unlike Arts Alive this will be daytime, quieter and more relaxed. Hopefully there will be more time to actually talk to people about my art, and their art too.

Preparations? Some cleaning, a lot of new paintings, cooking up some wonderful little bites of food that go well with art and wine and I'm ready.

Although North Coast Open Studios isn't until June, the committee has been busy preparing. Enthusiastically led by Taffy Stockton, meetings are focused and productive. Plans for the brochure are in progress with the North Coast Journal once again printing a color brochure.

We empathize with artists who feel the cost is a burden so we work hard to keep the rising costs down. Fees are supplemented with grants, a raffle, donations, and volunteers. Generous participating artists will be donating art for our raffle. The website, posters and brochures are all produced to bring artists and the community together. The raffle is an enticing and inexpensive opportunity to win a valuable piece of art. We are doing something different this year so stay tuned...

See Artists in Their Natural Habitat

North Coast Open Studios is a once a year opportunity to see artists in their natural habitats. Artists’ studios are often as much artwork as their creations are. On top of that, most artists do not welcome visitors into their inner sanctums lightly.

So, this really is a very special chance to see, not only what has been created recently, but the older artworks that no longer excite the creative artist as much. A common characteristic of the creative personalities is that they are most excited about what they are working on right now. “If it’s new, it must be the best,” is the artist’s cry. It may or may not be, but it will eclipse thoughts of older artworks. The advantage of Open Studios is that you can actually browse through those older pieces and discover the gems. It’s like a treasure hunt.

The other special feature of Open Studios is the opportunity to get to know the artist whose work you have admired for so long or to meet a new artist and discover their artwork – with the artist right there to talk with you about it. Fabulous!

It pays to plan your studio tour ahead of time. So get your NCOS guidebook and plot your adventure. Two weekends affords lots time to get out around the county and visit all those artists’ lairs.

What I'm preparing to sell during North Coast Open Studios

Having my very own opening is exciting and fun, not only because I get to meet so many interesting people, but also because I can offer to my visitors artistic things that I wouldn't consider trying to market anywhere ... mass production isn't my thing (at least not right now).

So far, the only reproductions of my paintings have been in note cards that I make. And those I offer for sale only occasionally in a few local stores. It's really interesting to see which images buyers choose & which cards sell the best. It's usually a surprise to me. I sell quite a few cards at my studio sale. I have boxed some as gift items that are offered at a substantial savings, and those are popular.

Last year I made sticky note pad books and bookmarks, which I'm doing again this year (but, I'm improving on the designs). I could never sell these items anywhere for the price I can sell them for at my studio. Also, all of those watercolor studies and small oil painting studies which I have painted will be offered at very low prices.

It's wonderful having a set time, with great publicity, to do a "clearance sale". I have so many paintings that it's impossible for me to display them all, and the more I create the less storage space I have, and I Must create new pieces. So, I feel that it's way better for someone else to have an inexpensive piece of original art hanging on their wall than for me to have it tucked away somewhere. It's really difficult dropping the price of a painting, because I only keep images that I really like ... the bad ones get recycled. But, there is only so much room ....what's an artist to do??? Besides when someone gets a really good deal - they're so happy ... it makes me happy. So, now I'm hoping that lots of interested art collectors come on over; they'll find some great deals!

Why am I part of North Coast Open Studios? Because it's important!

I have participated in North Coast Open Studios since the first year it was offered. I continue to open my studio each year because I believe it is worthwhile on many levels.

Humboldt County has a wealth of talented artists, Open Studios is a way to highlight and recognize them.

When people see work hanging in a gallery or a shop for sale they see only the finished product. But getting to visit an artist's work space and see the process one goes through to create a finished work of art is a learning experience that gives greater understanding of the value of an art piece.

For me personally, it is an opportunity to meet new people, to share with them my paintings...both finished and in progress, to explain what I paint and why and to answer questions. I want visitors to enjoy visiting my studio, browsing through paintings, prints and cards. I offer refreshments and lawn chairs for a break on their tour. And visitors are free to walk around my "casual" garden which is usually in bloom in June. Also, a lot of friends and neighbors and fellow artists drop in during the weekend and it's always good to see them.

Name recognition is also important. When I have an art opening, it's always nice to hear someone say, "I remember you. i came to your studio on the Open Studios tour".

While sales are always nice, to me it is more important for visitors to experience what the creative part of an artist's life looks like. I believe that anyone who goes on the open studio tour gains a greater appreciation for the value of our local art and the artists who create it. Also, as we continue on the path to becoming an art destination, open studios will help to assure community support.

Another reason I find Open Studios to be useful to me,,,,it gives me a good reason to
organize and declutter my studio before visitors arrive. Without that incentive, I might put off those mundane chores indefinitely!

All in all, I see Open Studios is a positive and happy experience, both for artists and the visitors who go on the tour.

Updates on North Coast Open Studios

Dear participating NCOS Artists: Thanks again for joining the 2009 Open Studios. Things are really coming together, and there is so much going on right now!

Artist Images
There is still time to submit a photo of yourself at work for use in the publication. Action shots are best, but any image of you and your artwork is great. We have a new image request: we are looking for photos of artists’ front doors for use on the poster. If you have an image of your door (preferably closed), please email me the image right away.

Artist Marketing Workshop
We have scheduled the first Artist Marketing Workshop for Thursday, April 30th at 6 pm. If you signed up to participate, you will be receiving more information about it shortly. If you did not sign up, but want additional information, please let me know. Workshop attendance is limited, and reservations are required.

Artist Reception & Show
The Artist Reception and Show is coming up soon! If you signed up to submit a piece, put it in your calendar that you need to have the piece for the show to the Ink People by Friday, May 1st. The Reception & Show will be Friday, May 8th at the Plaza View Room in the Jacoby’s Storehouse, Arcata. If you signed up to participate in the show, you will be receiving additional information soon.

NCOS Signs
The sign order for NCOS will be submitted on Friday, and will be available to pick up after May 8th. We only ordered signs for people who pre-ordered, so if you did not pre-order, but want a sign, please let me know before Friday.

Artist Listings for Publication
If you have not yet proofed your listing, please check it (I emailed it to you on Tuesday) and get back to me with whether or not the listing is OK. We do go to press very soon, so I need to hear back from everyone right away. Didn’t get a copy to proof? Please contact me immediately so I can get it to you.

Applications can be dropped off at The Ink People Center for the Arts (411 12th Street, Eureka) between 11 am and 4 pm. Need to make special drop off arrangements? Can’t drop yours off by the deadline? Please call me right away at (707) 834-6460 to make arrangements.

Every week the North Coast Journal connects Humboldt County readers with local artists: Arts Alive, Arts Arcata and McKinleyville Arts Night.

In this week's issue of the Journal, a nature painting by Linda Parkinson is featured in support of her show at Blake's Books in McKinleyville. Thirteen other art venues in McKinleyville will feature artists work Friday, March 20 from 6 p.m.-8 p.m. (See the March 19th Journal for more details.)

Look to the North Coast Journal on June 4, when the North Coast Open Studios guide will be inserted in the North Coast Journal, connecting a well-trained Journal readership with the largest Humboldt County art event of the year.

Fortuna artists Susan Cooper & Kay Harden are hoping to coordinate with other Fortuna artists regarding opening on Weekend 1 (June 6-7) of NCOS.

Howdy All Fortuna Artists, Just wanted to let you know that Kay Harden and I are going to participate in Open Studios June 6-7, in Fortuna . I'll have my 15th Street studio open, and she'll have hers at her gallery on 14th Street. I don't have e-mails for a lot of the artists down in our neck o' the woods, so please pass this on if you do. It would be good if we can all coordinate timing to draw visitors. Thanks, Susan Cooper

North Coast Open Studios Gearing Up for 2009!

Welcome to the North Coast Open Studios blog! We are excited to be starting this blog, and plan on using it to keep everyone up to date on what's going on with 2009 Open Studios. Check back weekly for updates and information on NCOS happenings!

Just to start... the 11th Annual North Coast Open Studios will be Saturday & Sunday, June 6-7 & 13-14.

The volunteer steering committee has been hard at work planning this year's event, and is pleased to announce some new features for 2009:

Full Color Publication: This year’s guidebook will be a full color magazine size publication! We are working with the North Coast Journal on producing a high quality guidebook that will be easy to use and show each artists' work in beautiful color.

Artists Show & Reception: We are proud to be hosting an Artists' Show and Reception during Arts! Arcata on Friday, May 8th, in the Plaza View Room. Check back for more information on what is sure to be a great show.

Artist Workshops: Are you an artist who needs some help learning to market yourself? NCOS will be hosting Artist Workshops offering hands-on assistance in marketing your open studio!
